Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are a group of anti-inflammatory drugs similar to the natural corticosteroid hormones produced by the cortex of the adrenal glands. Corticosteroids are used in the treatment of various skin problems, as well as in the treatment of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Corticosteroids are very effective for treating skin problems, but unfortunately have many serious side effects. Research is currently being done to develop safer corticosteroids including topical applications and modifying the molecules to preserve the anti-inflammatory properties while minimizing the undesirable side effects.
